About Mendiz
Mendiz is a bicycle manufacturer founded in 1984 by Eusebio Vélez de Mendizábal, professional cyclist and team manager in the 1960s and 70s.
Eusebio Vélez de Mendizábal was born in Durana, a small village near the city of Vitoria. He was a professional cyclist in the 1960s, competing with the KAS and Fagor teams and taking part in the three major tours, where he shared the peloton with the greatest riders of his time, such as Anquetil, Poulidor, Ocaña and Eddy Merckx, among others.
THE FIGURE OF EUSEBIO
In the 1963 Vuelta a España he finished 7th, 4th in 1964, 2nd in 1966 when he stood on the podium for the first time, and again in 1968, coming 3rd. In 1969 he completed his participation in the Vuelta with a 10th place finish.
He took part in two editions of the Giro d'Italia, finishing 10th and 11th overall, and the one thing he never completed was the Tour de France, as he did not manage to finish in any of the four editions he competed in.
He also participated in world championships, classics and many local races.
When his career as a professional cyclist came to an end, he continued to be linked to elite cycling, this time as Sports Director of the Kas cycling team, which he led to its period of maximum glory, between 1973 and 1978, managing cycling legends such as Txomin Perurena, Fuente and Pesarrodona. During those years, the team achieved two victories and two second places in the Vuelta a España, and two podiums in the Tour de France.
Throughout his long career, Eusebio earned the respect and affection of teammates and fans, as demonstrated by the tributes he received and the celebration of various events named after him.
THE MENDIZ COMPANY
At Bicicletas Mendiz we have been manufacturing and selling bicycles since 1984 at our headquarters in Júndiz, Álava. In the 1990s, we became a benchmark in the road and mountain bike sector.
The sons of the founder, Eusebio Vélez de Mendizábal, have worked with him from almost the very beginning and have been able to adapt to the changes in relocating the production and the changing needs of the market, always maintaining the brand’s hallmarks and especially preserving the quality of the product and generating value in the bicycle design.
Historically, our brand has always focused on medium-high profile riders, among whom we have always enjoyed an excellent reputation as a company of riders who make bikes for riders. This is because we have worked with top- and mid-range frames, whilst offering the customer the possibility of customising their bike according to a range of finishes.
In 2018, a number of new entrepreneurs decide to join the company, bringing enthusiasm to tackle the project of internationalising the brand, while maintaining the company’s essential values.
